A recent article on mindbodygreen.com predicts an upsurge in community-based fitness groups as there are tremendous benefits of movement and connection together. Psychologist David DeSteno, Ph.D., explains it this way:
“When you engage in exercise, not only does it release endorphins—the chemical that is responsible for the runner’s high—but it also releases endocannabinoids. These endocannabinoids socially bond people.”
Why is this so significant? We see the answer all around us as changes due to technology and the covid pandemic exacerbated isolation and loneliness in society, highlighted how critical social connection is for our happiness and well-being, both emotionally and physically. The U.S. U.S. Surgeon General report on the loneliness epidemic note that a lack of social connection can be as deadly as smoking 15 cigarettes a day!
