Nueroplasticity is the brain’s ability to rewire itself, and it’s something we talk about frequently at Body Moves. Why? Because rewiring your brain is the key to continual personal growth and positive mental health.
Stress can cause physical, psychological or behavioral symptoms. When it becomes chronic, a person may develop symptoms that are physical, psychological, or behavioral.
Here are three strategies to rewire your stress response
1. Mindfulness
Practicing mindfulness helps you observe your thoughts and feelings without judgment, allowing you to detach from stressful reactions; so instead of reacting in emotion, you are able to respond mindfully. Regular mindfulness practices can lead to structural changes in the brain, which may include increased grey matter in areas associated with attention and emotional regulation, strengthening the neural pathways that support a more balanced response to stress.
2. Breathwork
Breathwork directly targets the body’s stress response- the “fight or flight” mechanism and is a simple, quick way to activate your parasympathetic nervous system. (Click here to learn how to do a breathing exercise in a past post.) Consciously controlling your breath, such as practicing deep, slow breaths, promotes relaxation.
3. Movement Therapies
Activities like yoga, tai chi, and qi gong combine movement with deep breathing, inducing a state of calm. These practices are known for their ability to reduce stress, improve mental clarity, and enhance overall well-being.
Body Moves offers all three movement therapies in our regular class offerings, as well as special workshops on mindfulness and breathwork— including one to be offered this summer, so stay tuned for details!!
Otherwise, we’ll see you in the studio!
