My friend once postulated that most people prefer too carry a smaller purse, but at some point, that purse gets full. The solution? Buy a larger purse. Immediately there is more room and mental relief, so life continues until…stuff accumulates and the purse grows full again. The solution? Buy a bigger bag. Notice a problem?
As with a purse, it seems that “stuff” flows much more easily into our homes than out of them until one day— suddenly, it seems! —the house is full. But is this a problem? Or just a preference?
More and more, research shows the correlation between clutter and our mental health.
In the study “Life at Home in The Twenty-First Century,” a project conducted by researchers at the University of California, researchers found a direct relationship between clutter and stress levels. Women who defined their homes as cluttered had higher levels of cortisol compared to others who did not. Both mood and sleep were shown to be impacted by this environment.
That’s good news because decluttering can have a positive impact on your health!
MENTAL HEALTH BENEFITS of decluttering:
- Reduces stress and anxiety: Decluttering can help you feel more relaxed and in control of your environment.
- Improves focus: Decluttering can help you focus on important tasks.
- Enhances self-esteem: Decluttering can give you a sense of accomplishment.
- Fights depression: People who describe their home as cluttered tend to feel more depressed or fatigued.
PHYSICAL HEALTH BENEFITS of decluttering:
- Improves sleep: A cluttered bedroom can make it hard to relax and get quality sleep.
- Improves mood: Decluttering can help you feel more energized and productive.
- Reduces fall risks: Decluttering can help you feel less overwhelmed and stressed.
- Improves health: A decluttered house is easier to maintain, minimizing potential dangers such as mold, pests, or other potential hazards.
