We’re opting for a
stress-free summer at Body Moves!
Here’s what were going to focus on:
1. ADEQUATE SLEEP
This seems obvious, but the benefits of at least 7-8 hours of sleep per night cannot be overstated. Adequate rest boosts your immune system by increasing its production of immune cells and helps regulate inflammation, thereby helping to fight off unwanted infections. If you have a hard time falling asleep at night, consider what you can do to change that.
- Do you have a consistent sleep schedule? A consistent, pre-sleep ritual helps your body subconsciously prepare because it knows bedtime is soon to come. Going to bed and waking up at regular times (even and especially on weekends!) also helps regulate your body’s natural sleep-wake cycle.
- Are you off screens for at least two hours before bed? Screens emit a blue-light that interferes with melatonin production, a hormone that regulates sleep. This can disrupt your body’s circadian cycle
- Is food inhibiting your sleep? Or is lack of sleep affecting your food habits? Avoid large meals, caffeine, and alcohol before bed. Too little sleep can disrupt the functioning of certain hormones, actually leading to increased hunger, decreased feelings of fullness, and potential weight gain.
2. STAYING ACTIVE
Recreation refers to activities you engage in during leisure time for your enjoyment, relaxation, or personal satisfaction. This can include daily movement and exercise, but it also goes beyond that.
- Outdoor activities: Swimming, walking, nature walk, biking, gardening
- Indoor activities: Movement classes at Body Moves, pickle ball, cooking, reading, board games
- Social activities: Concerts, parties, community events
Activities such as these benefit your physical heath, boost your mental well-being, and your increase social connection with others. All important components of your well-being.
3. RELAXING
Rest and relaxation reduces stress, and benefits both the body and mind. Heightened stress can contribute to or worsen conditions like heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, and chronic pain. Conversely, stress reduction supports cortisol management and can help improve blood pressure, tissue repair, and blood circulation. Yoga, tai chi, or other gentle exercises (All offered at Body Moves!) can help reduce stress.
In just a few days, we will be posting a calendar of activities and events for our Stress-Free Summer.
It will include a calendar of events and other activities to help you stay active while also finding ways to rejuvenate your body and mind.
Looking forward to
relaxing and rejuvenating with you!
