This year, we are promoting a Stress-free Summer, but why?
What’s so significant about stress?
Stress causes our brains to enter fight or flight mode. Our sympathetic nervous system is quickened to release adrenaline and cortisol in order to make us more alert and increase our energy resources. This is our body’s way of self-protecting and self-preserving in a crisis.
When we’re in a state of stress, our brains activates a fight or flight response. In this natural survival mechanism, our sympathetic nervous system releases hormones like adrenaline and cortisol to raise blood pressure, increase our heart rate, making us more alert, and break down stored energy sources, so they are readily available. In a true crisis, these system-wide changes in your body will help you survive. But what if the crisis is manufactured? Or what we encounter a new one every ten minutes instead of just twice a day?
Due to constant connection via technology, we are bombarded by a constant string of mini-stressors. This leaves us in a chronic state of stress, causing us to be ill-prepared when an actual stressful situation arises. Research shows chronic stress is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, muscle loss, and even mental health disorders. Regular exercise can help to mitigate chronic stress.
Exercise is putting one’s body into a state of stress. That would normally be bad; however, regular exercise (regularly stressing one’s body), along with adequate rest and recovery, actually strengthens one’s body by allowing it to react and, subsequently, adapt to the stressors. This, in turn, trains the body to produce resources that actually reduce the body’s reactivity to stressors in other areas of life. This is essential in today’s society where stressors seem to be lurking at every turn (more on that tomorrow!!).
